SONY Open at Crandon Park 2014 Normally I really like Rennae Stubbs’ commentary. She doesn’t try to be too cute and is usually not an overbearing, obnoxious former player. Today, however, she really anoyed me while calling the Serena Garcia vs. Caroline Garcia match. It was clear from her commentary during the first set that Renae didn’t think Garcia stood a chance. After losing that set, Garcia won the second and at the moment, the third set is pretty close. Rennae atributes that to the fact that Serena is not playing well. Rennae likened this match to the match that Sam Stosur played against Serena WIlliams in the final of the US Open a few years ago. Renna e made the statement that although Sam won, Serena was not playing her best. Let me say this once more, any time a player or a commentator, or even a coach for that matter, says that an opponent won because the other competitor wasn’t playing their best, diminshes the victory. It’s failry obvious that when a highly ranked player losed to a lesser ranked player, that the star was probably not on their game. BUT maybe the lesser ranked player took their game away from them, or maybe the lesser ranked player just had their day. It should also be noted that a player of Serena’s caliber would probably be able to beat most players when she’s having an off day. So, let’s be a little more gracious when we make comments. I like Serena’s U of M colors, but really think that the hemline is way too short. It looks like a Venus hand-me-down that even Serena’s outgrown. Boo yuck. It’s hard to tell, but it looks as if the stands are more than half empty. That’s a shame. Ana Ivanovic wore an adorable LBD by Adidas. I loved seeing Gwen and Liz D. on FB mugging it up with the one and only Nick Bollettieri. Call me old school, but I think it’s the height of rudeness that some players (most today) walk out on to center court with head phones on. They don’t ackowledge the crowd, and act as if they are the most important people in the world. Donald Young has nothing to worry about, because when he strolled onto the stadium court to play John Isner, sporting some of the largest head phones I have ever seen, no one applauded him. Normally, I dont like Mary Carillos commentary, and tonight was no exception. Listening to her imitate Gabriela Sabatini in a press conference was absolutely painful. Lindsay Davenport finally had to ask her where she was going with her routine. Im sure Mary was going nowhere, she just thought that she was the funniest thing ever and wanted to show everyone just how hysterical she is. She was, however, the only one laughing. And lets not forget to mention that perhaps trying to talk like Sabatini was not exactly a classy thing to do. Way to be PC, Mary. Speaking of Mary, she not only gets the Most Annoying Talking Head Award but she gets the Dumbest Questions Asked Ever Award as well. She threw it out there that she cannot understand why serving percentages arent higher today. With the better racquet and string technology, in her opinion, the serves should be better today. She also informed us that if she were to coach a junior today, she would spend at least half the time working on the serve. Well, I came into the conversation a little after it started, so Im assuming here that shes also referring to American players. If this in fact was her thread, then I would love to ask her, Really? What about Roddick and Isner? Those two were and are the highest ranked Americans and had and have two of the best serves. Perhaps they needed and need more than just huge rocket serves. Maybe juniors today should work on LEARNING HOW TO PLAY ON ALL SURFACES AND PLAY AN ALL -COURT GAME AND HOW TO CONSTRUCT A POINT. Just a thought there All Knowing Funniest Mary.
