SOUND THE BATTLE CRY Have you heard of the battle gear our young soldiers wear to fight in combat? Its called armor for a reason. They have a vest with metal plates that I could not even lift! All in all, their armor weighs about 70 pounds and they have to be able to run and fight wearing this cumbersome gear. Its no wonder their backs and knees take a beating when they are deployed! Driving home the other evening, I heard a speaker talking about the armor worn by Knights in the Middle Ages. The chain mail portion, I was surprised to learn, was over 200,000 links of metal to form that portion of the suit and then there were plates placed strategically to protect vital organs and limbs; even their feet were covered. The helmet was like wearing a can on ones head which had a visor able to be raised or lowered for protection of the face. In all, the armor weighed between 70-100 pounds, and then they had to be able to hold their shield, wear a sword to their side, and hold a long spear. Each part is as necessary as the other to go into battle against the enemy, but the sword was the knights most prized possession, because without it, he was just a rider on a horse; with it he could fight the battles. Some even had sheets of metal to protect their horses. All of this took about 5 years to make, years of training and being mentored by more experienced Knights, and a lot of money, which was why the knight was such a respected soldier. We also have armor that we are instructed to put on. In Ephesians 6:14-17 (KJV) it says: Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:. Our sword, the Word of God, is also our weapon against the enemy; Jesus used it in His wilderness battle against the temptations of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12 KJV). Jesus answered the enemys tests each time with, It is written... And we need to know our scripture well enough to do the same! The final part of preparing for spiritual battle is often forgotten because it isnt listed as a part of the armor, but is vital all the same: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;. Prayer, intimate conversations with our Commander in Chief, is vital to the mission! My Jeanne
