SOURCE The New :: LAHORE: The poultry sector of Pakistan is undergoing a crisis situation as the cost of breeding the birds is now higher than the revenues earned, which has impacted both the farmers and the principle suppliers as per information imparted by stakeholders related to the poultry industry. The production cost of a parent bird to the breeder is Rs4000. The bird is reared for 64 weeks during which period it lays 120 eggs. The cost of one egg comes to Rs34 from which broiler or layer chicks are produced. The rates of one-day old chicks have plummeted from a peak of Rs75 to only Rs7, which has severely impacted the capability of the breeders to maintain their stocks. This inability would result in severe depletion of breeding stocks and acute shortage of poultry meats, adding that resultantly, the chicken meat rates would reach historic highs within the next four to five months.
