SPECIAL FORCES SOLDIER KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN: An Australian special forces soldier was killed during an operation in Uruzgan province in Afghanistan around 3pm (Australian eastern time) on Saturday. The soldier was killed by small-arms fire during an engagement with insurgents. Another soldier was seriously wounded, while an airman was also wounded during the incident. Immediate first aid was provided to the three servicemen . However, CDF General David Hurley told reporters in Canberra today that, "Sadly, despite their efforts, they could not save one of their mates". The special forces soldier is the 40th digger to have died in Afghanistan since Australia became involved in the conflict. The next of kin of the Australian soldier asked that he not be named. It was his fifth tour of Afghanistan, having also previously served in Iraq and East Timor.
