SPIKE LEES film DO THE RIGHT THING CAME OUT IN 1989 - 25 years (the length of time Ive been married) AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!!!!!!!!!! In Lee’s film, Raheem is killed while being restrained in a chokehold by an NYPD officer. Raheem’s death was actually inspired by the 1983 death of a real man, Michael Stewart, a 25-year old graffiti artist who died 13 days after a police officer placed him in a chokehold and asphyxiated him. Stewart was taken to the hospital in a coma and never woke up. In “Do the Right Thing,” when Raheem is killed, a voice in the crowd says, “They did it again, just like Michael Stewart.” 31 YEARS AFTER MICHAEL STEWART IN NEW YORK - SAME ISH DIFFERENT DECADE!!!!
