SPOILER ALERT: Generally, I am not too impressed by films. I tend to see all of the errors, which isnt very Zen of me, I know. But I cant help it. That said, I saw Birdman a few months ago at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and fell in love. Thanks to the SAG-AFTRA Awards, I saw it again yesterday. The long shots, the pace, the energy, awesome music, and the live theatre aspect, it all drew me in again. These are the things I love about film. The ability to take you, the voyeur, into the private moments people have. I think Michael Keaton made himself extremely vulnerable during this project, especially when he removed his hairpiece - showing us that he is aging, and the allegory of Birdman with Batman are obvious, and painful. I feel especially compelled by this allegory to share a story. Picture it: Brentwood, 2001. A poor young peasant girl is working at Starbucks to pay her exorbitant Hollywood rent, and when sneaking a Madeline cookie out of a jar near the cash register, Michael Keaton bursts in and says, I got ya! Busted, I dropped the Madeline and exclaimed,Holy shit its Batman! He sort of hung his head and came up to the counter and said, Yeah. Kind of like, he wanted to be Michael Keaton catching me with my hand in the cookie jar. But no, he was Batman. And now, Birdman. Well done. Innaritu is the man. https://youtube/watch?v=u26tUeVITCU
