SPORTS TALK: “United by Soccer-Fundy United hones skills, promotes physical activity,” By Jamie Heap-Amherst News, Friday, August 9, 2013 While the high school soccer careers of such athletes as River Hebert’s David Quinn ended last fall, the Fundy United soccer team enables careers to continue. Quinn, who scored an astounding 118 career goals with the RHDH Raiders, has been no less prolific this season for Fundy, in both league and tournament action. “Well boys, we played our hearts out this weekend, and it made me extremely proud to wear a Fundy United jersey,” stated Quinn on July 14. “Under the circumstances, a silver medal is nothing to be ashamed of,” he added in reference to the team’s second place finish at the annual PEI Police Association Youth Soccer Tournament in Charlottetown. Dartmouth United won the tournament. On July 13, Lane Glennie notched Fundy United’s loan goal in a 3 to 1 loss to Dartmouth United. David Quinn scored a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Riverview. Fundy United, an Eastern Soccer League (ESL) team based out of Amherst, is comprised of 14 to 18 year olds throughout the county. In addition to the two aforementioned players, Fundy United also consists of Taylor Brundage, Zack Creese, Liam Davis, Connor Hurley, Keaton Mapplebeck, Quinton Merlin, Patrick Moore, Tyler Porter, Caleb Pye, Colton Pyke, Spencer Richard and Adam Smith. Through Friday, August 2 the Fundy United Boys division I soccer team enjoyed a 7-2-1 record (22 points), good enough for third place in the twelve team division. The ESL consists of a number of boys and girls soccer divisions that enables athletes to hone their skills while staying physically active during the summer. In addition to the aforementioned under 16/18 boys division I soccer team, Amherst also fields team in the following ESL divisions: under 12 divisions I and II boys; under 12 division I girls; under 14 division I boys and under 14 division I girls. Amherst’s participation in the Eastern Soccer League provides another example of local sports teams’ looking for more fans to come out and cheer them on to victory.
