SPRING BRINGS OUT MOWERS, TRACTORS, ATVs, UTVs AND LOADS OF QUESTIONS. When wondering about coverage for vehicles you use to maintain your properties, first determine the type of vehicle. Then ask how and where those vehicle are used. These answers can help determine how best to insure these risks. Homeowners policy coverage In general, riding lawn mowers, garden tractors, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), such as Cushman, Gator and Mule, are covered on the insured premises under our homeowners policies for property and liability coverages. But not without a few twists and turns. Questions ??? Asking these questions can help properly insure a riding lawn mower, garden tractor, all-terrain vehicle or utility terrain vehicle and avoid an unpleasant surprise: Do you help your neighbors cut their grass? Do you help your neighbors plow snow? Do you trailer the unit to maintain another property your own? Do you assist friends or relatives at their homes? Do you cut grass for others and get paid? Does your child use it to make extra money? Do you use the unit for recreation? Homeowners policies exclude coverage for these types of vehicles and other land motor vehicles unless the vehicles are used solely for the service of the insured premises and are not licensed for road use. Any other use on or off the insured premises excludes coverage. For example, while the customer takes his riding mower to cut grass at a neighbor’s home, relative’s home or even his own seasonal property coverage does not apply to the riding lawn mower because it is being used to do something other than maintain the insured premises. If there’s any business use, this would need to be insured under commercial lines. Replacement-cost coverage only applies for customers who have Personal Property Replacement Coverage – Option 14 or Gold Star policies. Since there is no dollar limit in the policy for land motor vehicles, the Coverage B – Contents Limit applies.
