SPSR Mission reports. After thirty years of rescues (some in rather hazardous conditions), no SPSR members have been injured until now. See mission report below. June 30th 1:40PM a 40’ trawler north of the Little Wicomico jetty picked up a crab pot in its propeller. The boat was towed to Jennings Boatyard. Time on call 3 hours. July 2nd at 4:30 PM a call was received for the sheriff that a 20’ Mako with 2 aboard was taking on water. At that time a strong thunderstorm was passing through the area. Rescue I responded and found a man, without life jacket, out of the boat holding it off of the sand bar inside #6 at the mouth of the Great Wicomico River. The 10 year old granddaughter on the boat had her life jacket on. We got a tow line to the man who got back in the boat after tying the tow line to the bow. No attempt to tow the boat was made until he finally sat down. The boat was freed from the sand bar. The boat was towed to deep water which resulted in much of the water running out of the scuppers and over the transom. In bringing the boat along side to complete the dewatering apparently a wave came between the 2 boats pushing the stern of the rescued boat out and the bow in. The pulpit with an anchor hanging under it hit Rescue I with a crew members finger between the 2 boats. He lost 1 inch of his middle left finger. The Northumberland Rescue Squad took him to the hospital and the boat was taken to Shell Landing. Time on call 1 ¾ hours. July 5th at 10 PM a call was received that a 43 foot jet drive boat with 13 aboard was taking on water near Fleets Bay. Rescue I responded and took the vessel under tow. The boat was returned to the owners dock on the Great Wicomico River. Time on call 6 hours. July 7th at 4:45 PM a 26’ sailboat with 1 man and his dog aboard reported that it was disabled with tangled sails approximately 4 miles north east of #4 at the entrance to the Great Wicomico River. Rescue I towed them to Jennings Boatyard. Time on call 2 hours. July 8th at 1:40 PM the sheriff’s office relayed a call from Boat U.S. requesting SPSR assist a 21’ center console disabled near B-10 in the Great Wicomico River. Rescue I towed the boat to the Horn Harbor Restaurant ramp. Time on call 1 ¾ hours. July 10th 4:15 PM a call was received from the Sheriff’s office that a 33’ sailboat was aground near the Smith Point Marina. Rescue I towed it to deep water and the boat proceeded to Cockrell Railway. Time on call 3 hous. July 14th at 5:55 PM a call was received from the Sheriff’s office that a 17’ boat with 4 aboard including 2 children was taking on water just north of the Great Wicomico River. The first 2 crew members that arrived at the boathouse took Rescue II which is the fastest boat. Rescue I followed. The boat was not in a critical situation so Rescue I took it in tow and took it to Buzzards Point Marina. Time on call 2 hours.
