SRINAGAR: At least three youth including a post graduate student who had gone missing from North Kashmir’s Sopore town last month have joined militant ranks. Police sources told CNS that on May 14 last month, they received information that at least three youth in the age group of 20 to 23 have gone missing from the town. “We accordingly called their family members for clarification and they admitted that trio are missing,” a top police official told CNS on condition of anonymity. Sources said that two youth hail from village Brathkalan and one is from Duroo village, which is the native place of Hurriyat Leader Syed Ali Geelani. Well placed sources in Counter Intelligence Unit identified the trio as Sameer Ahmad Wani (Duroo),Reyaz Ahmad Mir and Adil Ahmad Mir both residents of Brath Kalan Sopore. A police official said that Adil Ahmad Mir was pursuing Masters Degree in Economics from Barkatullah University Bhopal and as per reports, he was supposed to join his classes on May 25 which he did not. “We have inputs that two of them are roaming in Kupwara forests with Lashkar-e-Toiba cadres who are mostly non-locals. It is not easy to locate all of them at this time. One Sameer Ahmed was already in touch with militants from 2007 and he was also associated with ‘Tableegi Jammat’ and is aware about the terrains of frontier district Kupwara,” the official said adding that they have apprehensions that Sameer could persuade more youth to join militant ranks. When contacted Superintendent of Police Sopore, Abdul Qayoom said that the missing youth may have joined the militant ranks. “The trio may have joined the militant outfit LeT. There are reports that one of them is roaming in the outskirts of Sopore town,” he said adding barring these three youth no other youth have joined the militant ranks in Sopore.
