ST PIERRE PARK GOLF COURSE NOTICE Greens renovation - TopicsExpress

ST PIERRE PARK GOLF COURSE NOTICE Greens renovation programme This week commencing Monday 12 August 2013 the greens are to be hollow cored and deep scarified as the final act for this year in the effort to reduce the organic matter layer in the greens. The aim was at the beginning of the year to reduce it by 25% and with the renovation work planned for this week of hollow coring and deep scarification we should meet our target. The equipment being used is specialised in removing vast amounts of organic matter (Thatch) and will follow the contours of the greens ensuring that a consistent depth is achieved over the putting surface. The greens will then be top dressed to fill in the core holes which will also help to dilute the thatch due to microbial activity. SOME HOLES WILL BE OUT OF PLAY WHILST WORK IS ONGOING! The move to this time of year is to make the most of a quiet time in the golf calendar and to ensure we get a good recovery in good weather conditions. Although the greens have been aerated to a depth of 5 inches there is a compact layer below this which is restricting good drainage in long periods of wet weather causing the root zone to become anaerobic. It is also planned to aerate to a depth of 9 inches later in the year with 12mm solid tines at about 100mm centres, this should improve drainage, root growth and the anaerobic conditions. Hollow coring and deep aeration is a very important practice on golf courses and other fine turf areas and is sometimes neglected because of the disruption it causes, the time it takes plus the ever increasing amount of play in the golf calendar. The more the greens can be cored and verti drained the healthier they will become with less and less disruption being the norm. Thanking you for your anticipated cooperation.
