STARTING JANUARY 1, 2015, THE RULES FOR LICENSE TRANSFERS HAVE CHANGED. WHEN YOU PURCHASE ANY USED CAR YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE NEW PLATES AND TABS. WHAT THIS MEANS TO LEAVITT AUTO SALES Even when a vehicle you are purchasing has good tabs we are required to remove them and charge you for new plates and tabs for a year WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU, OUR CUSTOMER We must collect the cost of the tabs and plates, over and above the cost of the vehicle and the taxes. We cannot include the cost in the price of the vehicle. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? According to the Washington independent auto dealers association the legislation that makes this change was prompted by 3m corp. 3m is the company that makes the license plates. Their lobbyists pushed the legislation forward, claiming that the current plates become less reflective over time. WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THIS? You call your local state representative(s) and local state senator, and complain. Their phone numbers are available online go to app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/ Enter your address and select ‘legislative’ then search. There you will find links to your legislators. SENDING AN EMAIL IS GOOD BUT CALLING IS BETTER. IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH ATTENTION ANY ISSUE WILL RECEIVE IF AN ELECTED OFFICIAL GETS JUST A FEW CALLS ABOUT IT. I have an unconfirmed report that, when trading in a vehicle that you can keep the plates off the trade and use them on the new vehicle. if that is true that will be nice.
