STATEMENT [No 21/2013] [Monday Sept 3, 2013] The UFDF has called on the AG to explain why are the people and their elected representatives in parliament being forced to comply with Sec 160 (1-6) requiring three quarters of all registered voters to vote YES in a referendum before any amendment to the 2013 constitution can be made, while they, the unelected, unrepresentative Regime can, with a stroke of a pen amend the same constitution at anytime up till December 31st 2013 by a simple decree as highlighted in Sec 161 (1-3)? The UFDF has called on the AG to explain why are the people and their elected representatives in parliament being forced to comply with Sec 160 (1-6) of their 2013 constitution requiring three quarters of all registered voters to vote YES in a referendum before any amendment to the constitution can be made, while the unelected, unrepresentative Regime can, with a stroke of a pen amend the same constitution at any time until December 31st 2013 by a simple decree as highlighted in Sec 161 (1-3)? The UFDF says at the time of the release of the constitution the AG purposefully made no mention of these outrageous provisions which amount to a display of utter contempt towards the Chiefs and people of Fiji. The UFDF asks where is the ‘equal citizenry’ they talk about in their Preamble quote‘declaration that we are all Fijians united by common and equal citizenry?’ unquote. How equal is this citizenry they speak of when just 11 unelected, unrepresentative cabinet members can amend by a simple decree and in the comfort of the air-conditioned cabinet room any part of the 2013 constitution they like but which no fewer than 378,441 registered voters in Fiji must all say yes through a national referendum before the same amendment can be adopted? How can a requirement demanding 378,441 voters to agree to an amendment that 11 individuals who make up the unelected, unrepresentative cabinet can do by drafting a decree and getting the Illegal President to sign? Where is the one vote one value and equal citizenry? The UFDF said that this provision should leave everyone in no doubt just what ‘value’ the regime places on the majority of our people verses the ‘value’ they award themselves through the use of force and intimidation and the manipulation of the amendments to the 2013 constitution in preparation for their planned rigging of the 2014 election.
