STATEMENT OF DAN SHORES ON GROWING FOREIGN THREATS TO HUMANITY I encourage anyone who can handle graphic images to take to the Internet and look at what the militant members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (“ISIS”) are doing to civilians in their path. I have read a wide range of reports, and have seen images, of beheadings, including the beheading of a little girl who was allegedly Christian. To me, these atrocities represent hell on earth. Furthermore, Israel is under constant attack by the terrorist group Hamas, an organization that controls the Palestinian Parliament with the stated goal of destroying Israel and killing Jews. Moreover, in Europe, anti-Semitism and violence against Jews has significantly increased, including violent clashes in France earlier this month, such as attacks on a synagogue and Jewish-owned businesses with demonstrators shouting “Death to the Jews.” The world is sleeping and needs to wake up now. These extreme forces threaten humanity and the world we live in. America and the rest of the world have a duty to protect human rights, which includes protecting religious freedom and people that are subject to atrocities and heinous violence and persecution. But we are not fulfilling that duty; instead, we are looking the other way. History dictates that this is a dangerously wrong course to take. Elected American leaders are failing us right now in many ways, especially on these issues. Barack Obama is looking the other way and failing to stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel at a time when their nation and citizens face the real threat of destruction. Congressman Bill Keating, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security Committees, remains oddly silent on these issues. Apparently, it’s all about politics to them, not leadership. To me it’s not about politics. This is about right and wrong, and about providing our next generation with an America that is free, prosperous and safe. That includes working tirelessly to promote world peace, standing up for human rights (including religious freedom), and having the courage to take the lead to stop human atrocities. Standing pat does nothing but exacerbate the violence and hatred that is currently spreading in our world, because it signals our implicit approval. I support Israel in its efforts to defend itself against Hamas, and if need be, to destroy Hamas if they refuse to stop attacking Israel and live in peace. I condemn nations that ignore anti-Semitic violence and intimidation to exist within their borders, and encourage them to crack down on such violence and intimidation. I call upon the President to encourage other world leaders to come together now to strongly confront ISIS, which represents the most despicable and atrocious ideology I have ever seen in my lifetime.
