STATEMENT OF PURPOSE GUIDELINES 1. Student should browse through the websites of the University/Institutes/programs of interest to him. Obtain brochures and booklets and read through them carefully. Highlight the aspects of the programs that appeal 2. Read more about Country Chosen- specific aspects of the Country or City those are interesting. 3. Gather more inputs about the University (such as Location of campus, international student services, rankings if any, alumni groups, accreditation, courses offered, Course Content of chosen program and Career Services in the university, Work opportunities available in the market after completion of the chosen 4. Student should try to get a general understanding of how the field / Course Chosen is going to help in enhancing his knowledge and will be constructive in shaping his career. 5. What and when were the major moments in Student life that have led him to the current interest(s) of studying outside India and University and Country chosen? 6. Why did Student choose this course? – Relevance to past qualification history and education, Work 7. Why did Student choose Student undergraduate/ postgraduate major? - If any. 8. What are Student career goals? Thorough Knowledge on Available Work opportunities / Jobs post completion 9. What Student hopes to accomplish? What drives Student? What motivates Student? – If any. 10. If the student is changing his area of specialization (non-cognate students), he needs to mention his clear intentions of doing so - E.g. Any technical field student opting for management courses. Step III:-Outline Statement of Purpose 11. Using brief comments/statements, organize Student’s writing and ideas that strengthen his statement of purpose. E.g. one can concentrate on their life experiences and give specific examples. 12. Student’s SOP should cover these areas and, preferably, in this order: • Introducing self- Student’s Qualifications and related Learning experiences leading to Student’s professional experience if any and related life experiences worthy of mentioning. • Academic Background and Work Experience- What classes have best prepared Student for further study and Student’s specific interests? What has been the role of mentors or professors (if any) in influencing Student’s academic pursuit? What experiences have significantly enriched, informed, or influenced Student study choices (for example language study, unique work opportunities)? • Highlight Student’s academic, extracurricular (if relevant), and social accomplishments (if relevant). Mention any project, internship or academic research that adds unto it. • How did Student become interested in his decision to study outside India? • What aspects of the Country, University and program that Student has chosen appeals to him? And why that specific selection is being made - E.g. Why Australia? Why the said Program? Why the said • What are Student’s interest(s) relevant to above three aspects? • What are Student’s future goals for further study/ work? Student’s career goals (relevant to the industry and job opportunities for the course Student has chosen). • What characteristics of the University/program can help Student accomplish his goals? What positive aspects does the Student bring to the University/program? If any. Step IV: - Write Statement of Purpose When writing the statement of purpose: 13. Always use positive language when referring to self. 14. Give detailed, but concise examples. 15. Use transition words, sentences and paragraphs. The statement must read smoothly. 16. Avoid using vocabulary or any particular references that Student does not know about. 17. Refrain from repeating. 18. Have strong opening and closing paragraph. 19. Stay within the 1-2 page limit!
