STATEMENT ON ASYLUM SEEKERS Good Shepherd values every person who seeks asylum or who applies for refugee status in Australia. We understand that hope, education, employment and freedom are the reasons why all is put at risk to start a new life. We thank newly arrived migrants and refugees for all that they bring and for participating fully in Australian society. We thank the resettlement services that assist refugees and asylum seekers with housing, food and access to economic independence. We stand with women who seek asylum. Putting children and family before one’s own survival is a true act of courage and love. We recognise that any one of us could be an asylum seeker had we been born in a country torn apart by conflict. We fear for the future of Australia where public policy regarding any person is without compassion and human dignity. This is our assessment of the current policies of both major political parties. We urge the government and the opposition to desist from campaigning on asylum seekers and refugees unless compassion is at the heart of the debate. Nothing good has come from ten years of political division on migration, asylum seekers and refugee issues. We hope all sides can fully understand that change is our only hope. Good Shepherd
