STATEMENT ON SENTENCING OF FORT HOOD TERRORIST NIDAL HASAN “The Army claimed they didn’t want to prejudice their case against Hasan. That excuse is now gone.” Today, a U.S. Army court martial panel sentenced Major Nidal Hasan to death for the terrorist attack at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, that killed fourteen people and wounded dozens of others. In response, Neal Sher, one of the attorneys for many of the Fort Hood victims, released the following statement: “This terrorist is getting what he deserves, but the families whose lives he horribly altered deserve more from our government. For four years, the government has ignored the Fort Hood victims and swept their ailments and struggles under the rug. The Department of Defense has refused to label the attack as terrorism, in the process denying its victims the medals, benefits and compensation to which they are entitled. “The Army claimed they didn’t want to prejudice their case against Hasan. That excuse is now gone. “Now that the court martial and sentencing is complete, the Defense Department and Justice Department need to do the right thing. They must officially call this attack terrorism, accept responsibility for their own actions that led to the attack, and give the victims the benefits, medals and compensation to which they are entitled. “If the executive branch refuses to act immediately, then we call on Congress to fairly compensate the victims in the same manner as the 9/11 Pentagon attack victims were compensated. The victims of the Fort Hood attack are owed this nation’s respect and honor, not the stonewalling and bureaucratic morass they have received.” More information about the Fort Hood attack and the government’s actions can be found at TruthAboutFortHood.
