STOP the Zimbabwe baby elephant sale to China! THANK YOU to our Harare, Zimbabwe #GMFER organizer Kenesias Dambakurima for protesting this atrocity and hand-delivering a letter of demand below to the Zimbabwe Consulate General on December 11th in Cape Town, SA! The letter from Kenny, GMFER and San Franciscos March for Elephants is directed to the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, Head of Mission B. Mugobogobo Consul General, and the Minister of Tourism Hon Mzembi and copied to CITES John Scanlon, to help SAVE the kidnapped animals. Thank you, Kenny, from the GMFER team! Text of letter: To the Zimbabwean Consular General and Minister Mzembi, Zimbabwean Minister of Tourism. (Copied John Scanlon, CITES) 12.09.2014 Dear Sirs, Re: Please release all wild creatures recently kidnapped from their natural habitat and prevent all future exploitation and importation of Africa’s dwindling wild heritage We recently learned of the fate of 34 “kidnapped” baby elephants, 7 lions and 10 sable antelope in Zimbabwe; the animals appear to have been captured by the government of Zimbabwe in Hwange National Park (a popular tourist destination) and are fated to be exported to China and/or the UAE. Sirs, selling or trading Africa’s dwindling wild heritage to foreign nations by violently kidnapping wild creatures from their families and homes is not only cruel but also deprives the people of Zimbabwe of their right to their natural heritage, as well as depriving those who visit Zimbabwe to experience its wild places. Science repeatedly notes that mammalian young need their mothers and families to stay alive; this is particularly true of elephants whose calves have a very poor chance of surviving when removed from a cohesive and nurturing family unit; recent news reports allege that at least one of the kidnapped elephant calves has died. Has your government considered the fate and future of these creatures once they are removed from Africa to climates and locations unsuited to their wellbeing; are they destined for zoos and circuses and a lifetime of slavery and abuse? It must also be noted that trading animals to countries included by CITES among the gang of 19 is tantamount to a blatant disregard of an accepted code of ethics as well as of the recommendations from a highly regarded community of elephant conservationists, researchers and advocates. We hope you act to restore the worlds faith in your government and its policies by reversing the decision to export Zimbabwe’s wild heritage to UAE/China and return these young animals to where they belong; to where they will always belong; with their families and in the wild. Sincerely and hopefully, Kenesias Dambakurima The GMFER Team March for Elephants, San Francisco
