STORY EIGHT: The face of Unconditional Love. This is the story of Karen. There are people in need who cannot make it to the pantry for a variety of reasons and so they ask for food deliveries. Our volunteers will accommodate them once then make an assessment. There was a call from one such woman, Karen. Karen is 40 and was living in subsidized housing. She said she could not drive and was on disability. She had very little funds. When our volunteers met Karen they found out that not only did she has MS and epilepsy but was about to lose her apartment. She said, Some people measure their lives by how successful they are. I measure my life with a real small ruler. If Im not lying in the gutter, its a good day. Karen said she wasnt worried about losing her apartment. They wont let me sleep in the streets. THAT would be bad publicity. She WAS worried that if DSS moved her they would take her dog away. She explained that Rocco was her joy, her best friend, her life. She tried unsuccessfully to have him legally called a service dog. With that designation, Rocco could not be taken away from her. Without it..Rocco would be gone if Karen were sent to a shelter. Karens food was delivered to her every week for 3 months, there were volunteers who brought food for Rocco too. One afternoon there was frantic call from Karen. She said that DSS was putting her in a shelter and her worst nightmare was coming true...they would be separating her from Rocco. She said she was going to fight it. Our volunteers tried to help. They made calls to DSS but all messages that were left went unanswered. Karen had a fierce resolve. She called every town, county, state and Washington official she could think of. Every newspaper! She phoned, faxed and wrote letters. She called lawyers and court officers demanding court dates. She called animal advocates and pet sanctuaries. As sick as Karens body is, her spirit is alive and healthy. The unconditional love of a pet is a better medicine than anything a big pharma can sell as a cure. Karen finally did get help she worked so hard for. She now lives in a Nassau county shelter..with Rocco! Rocco is the face of unconditional love. Please pray for Karen and Rocco.
