STRAIGHT PUNCH WITH NANA KOFI SARPONG The Ebola Crisis And Social Media Fools It is often said that past events often vanish like yesterday’s headlines on the front pages of newspapers. However, I am still in love with a headline I came across yesterday on the pages of a local newspaper titled “West Africa: Journalists Must Avoid Mass Hysteria Over Ebola”. The message sends a warning shot across the bows of media practitioners, particularly those social media fools who behave like vampire bats flocking together on the website, writing all sorts of bunkums and peddling lies with the propensity to destroy Sierra Leone and in their tracks to make the country ungovernable. Ruefully, however, some perceived educated people now political laughing stock in Sierra Leone’s mainstream politics also engage the social media and settling scores over their own political inadequacies. In their determination and “flimflammer” outrage to paint the APC and the country in a gloomy outlook, writes rubbish as depicted by journalistic bigots and plastered such nonsense on social media to gain political capital. If somebody who is sensible is sacked by a government that frowns at sycophancy, backbiting and stupidity, that political bigot should not pick bones with the head of state. But rather cajole the president to be considered for another appointment. Reading between the lines, however, we always know where such rubbish writings on social media come from as a demeaning factor to paint the country bad to the outside world. Those wanting to seek political reprieve must not use social media to destroy the country, as well as using the Ebola nasty blotches we often see on the social media to settle scores. If those behind this nonsense are doing so to gain political recognition, we are waiting for the 2018 whistle for the elections to blow and we will show those political bigots that the pen is mightier that the sword. Some of those treacherous politicians in Sierra Leone will open their mouth: hyper…hyper…hyper…hyper like a fish in the pond. Having already destroyed the country under the guise of settling political scores, the day will come that we will also pay such people in their own counterfeit coin, bearing in mind that if you throw a ball against the wall it bounces back to you in full force. At this point, President Koroma should stay cool as we are around to sieve the chaff from the grain in all that political nonsense going on in the country that seeks to draw the country backwards. At a time Sierra Leone has gained international resonance and sympathy for the spread of the deadly Ebola, some citizens inclined to become politicians and vouching to take leadership roles are some people steely determined to destroy the country through so called social media. Look at how foreigners including international partners are streaming into the country to support the cause of humanity, pouring in finances, medicines, materials and vehicles to fight the Ebola in our midst. Wouldn’t those Sierra Leone behind the perilous social media propaganda have sympathy for their country and the teeming population at this crucial time and put a stop to the uselessness and hopelessness they are mired into under the guise of politics? This is the battle those social media fools should be prepared to contend with when the time comes. We will battle them locally and internationally till they succumb to the realities of sustainable development taking place in Sierra Leone. Who the cap fit must wear it!
