STRETCH MARKS Stretch marks are medically known as striae. Your skin is in layers. When it stretches, the middle layer known as dermis breaks and reveals the inner layer. That is what appears as red marks. Risk factors are: -Pregnancy -Weight gain -Increased growth rate during puberty -Genetics -Excessive use of steroids (glucocorticoids) Stretch marks do no pose any health risks. Some will fade with time. To prevent/treat: 1. Moisturise. The skin withstands stretching more when it is hydrated. Thus you should regularly use a good body lotion to prevent skin drying. 2. Ask a chemist for glycolic acid and combine with vitamin C. It boosts collagen production by the skin. 3. Olive oil and aloe vera are also good on the skin. 4. Laser surgery 5. Cosmetic surgery If your strectch marks are a worry to you, see a dermatologist. There are advanced techniques that can be used. NB: Avoid those products that claim to repair stretch marks. They do not work..... HANIFA
