STRIKE - 31st Oct - hey Goldsmiths Art dept - were all on strike, right? Meeting about it tomorrow (below). Im not teaching till mid-Nov I guess but would be nice to see staff and students next thursday! Apparently management have started trying to scare people off already: note - you dont need to be in the union already to strike though you should join now! And you dont need to tell management youre striking. Students - come down and support the staff if you can! Heres a mail about it all from UCU: We would ask all branches to ensure that their members receive a clear message that they do not need to inform their management ahead of the action whether they will be taking part in either strike action or the action short of a strike and they do not need to respond to such messages. You can find our specific guidance on this here: ucu.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=5289#faq5299 Our AGM, tomorrow (Thursday 24 October 2013), 1pm in RHB137a will be an opportunity for us to clear up any misconceptions, and for us to organise for action to be as effective as possible. We will also be electing our new exec committee. Next Thursday will be the first time we have seen a nationwide strike involving all three unions and it is great way to kick off our pay campaign and to demonstrate to the employers the strength of feeling that exists around the issue of pay. Remember that the sector as a whole has over £1 billion in surplus but has not found it possible to award an above inflation pay rise for some years. As a result, university staff in London have seen a 20% decrease in pay compared to cost of living. There will be picket lines starting at 8am and we encourage you to come down to join us. We hope that there will also be a teach out in association with the Students Union and if you would like to take part in this, please let us know as soon as possible. We are inviting members, particularly those who are hourly-paid, to apply to our hardship fund if they lose money because of the strike action. We are able to offer £60 - simply contact [email protected] with a short explanation of how you will be losing out. Dont forget to come to our meeting tomorrow at 1pm in RHB137a!
