STRONG AS A HORSE? I read somewhere that traditional medicine has its roots in the observation of animal behavior. In ancient China, physicians observed monkeys to see what leaves they ate. Sick or wounded animals were trailed for vital clues on what herbs they sought in the wild. These observations contributed much to human knowledge about medicinal herbs. This brings us back to the horse. Horses are strong and resilient. What gives them such power? Some say its the food they take, including oats, a firm favourite. In nutritional science, the cereal known as oatmeal is a proven cholesterol-reducer. It has more protein and fibre than most other foods, while reducing appetite for much of the day. This makes it great for weight watchers. Oatmeal (for breakfast) also restores and stabilizes blood-sugar levels. But do note that not all oatmeal is the same. Opt for organic and unprocessed, if possible. This contains more nutrients but takes longer to prepare than the instant variety. For added flavour, add fresh or frozen fruits or honey. There are numerous ways to make your healthy oatmeal more palatable and even delicious.
