SULPHUR TOXICITY: BOY IN RAKHINE STATE RECOVERED ----------------------------------------------------------------- Rumour has spread on the internet that a child hospitalized in Sittway, Rakhine State, is infected with Ebola virus. Ministry of Health confirmed yesterday that he is suffering from the ‘Stevens–Johnson syndrome (SJS), caused by sulphur toxicity. Actually, Mg Myo Lin Naing caught fever on 21st July and took some pills. As the disease didnt relieve, the boy was sent to Minbya hospital two days on. Then finally, he was referred to Sittway hospital on the 24th. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a fatal skin disease that usually results from a drug reaction. The viral diseases reported to cause Stevens– Johnson syndrome ranges from Herpes simples virus to mumps. It usually begins with fever, sore throat, and fatigue, which is commonly misdiagnosed and therefore treated with antibiotics. Other Symptoms include Ulcers in the mouth, lips, genital and anal regions. Mouth ulcers are so painful that the patients ability to eat and drink reduced. Conjunctivitis of the eyes occurs in about 30% of children who develop SJS. A rash of round lesions about an inch across arises on the face, arms and legs, and soles of the feet, but usually not the scalp. Mg Myo Linn Naing is recovering due to intensive care of medical staff.
