SUMMER BEFORE 8th GRADE all at once the little clown grew up. Got big as he was going to get. Skinny as a rail but six foot one, biggest kid in the school. His work boots from then on got resoled and heeled for the next twenty years, till they rotted apart, got filled with dirt, planted in hens and chicks and given away as a present. In school for the first time boys wanted to fight and jumped him out of the blue to prove he wasn’t so tough. Roughhousing was one thing, but if it wasn’t fair, something in him took over, never let him get the worst of it.
