SUNDAY, 12/14/14 ACTS 2:44-45 “Who is The Church, and Why Does it Matter? If you asked me to compare the church today and the early church, I would say that the early church was SELFLESS, and the church today (which includes me!), is very, very SELFISH. Selfish with our money, selfish with our time, and selfish with all of our resources. Check out two quick verses about the very early church: 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. Wow. They didn’t meet in a whole bunch of locations, or establish all kinds of “churches” or “denominations.” They met in one place. Why? Because they couldn’t imagine doing it any other way! They shared EVERYTHING they had. If they saw someone had a financial need, they would go sell something and give the money to that person. SELFLESS? You better believe it! THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. Would you agree that if you are absolutely in love with someone, you will naturally be more selfless toward that person? —2. Do you agree that for the most part, the church today is selfish? What examples would you give? —3. The early church was NOT perfect. You will see as we continue to study it that LOTS of people in the early church made LOTS of mistakes. But the church back then just grew so fast, and seemed to love each other no matter what. —4. Let’s keep this practical. In what ways are YOU selfish or selfless? Here is a little exercise to try: Pay attention to how you act with other people, especially people who you claim to love. Grade yourself. Don’t allow any middle ground. Simply record if you are acting SELFISH or SELFLESS. Try this for a day, or a couple of days. Do it at home, do it at church, do it at school. See what happens! PRAYER: ACTS!
