SUNDAY CAMPAIGN UPDATE! IN CASE you wondering what is happening- heres a quick summary - ASF have to convince the State Govt by Christmas that they have sufficient community support to proceed with their project. THIS is where YOU come in helping us to make sure the State end up with a great big NO. ASF lead a foreign consortia which include two large Chinese state-owned companies. The state has offered them public land to build an integrated resort and ship terminal in the Broadwater - claiming that Mayor Tate had a mandate last election. Given most of the present elements of the project were never mentioned by Mayor Tate, much less in their present location, that argument has died a pretty obvious death. ASF have a big plan (the design for which remains not officially disclosed) to construct a casino, high rise hotels/apartments etc incl a 50 storey high rise on Wave Break island (the one near DJ Park). Their pics to date suggest they will expand the landmass through dredging the Broadwater to almost double the islands size... plus they also have a development sign all over the sandbar to the north of WB. The ship terminal is presently mooted for the south eastern side (we think) which means the Seaway and a large area will have to be dredged - at least 3 million m3 for that aspect alone. There is much evidence that a ship terminal is not economically viable given the dredging costs - and as well, it entails significant environmental damage to the Broadwater (possibly catastrophic damage). Previous studies have indicated significant navigational problems for modern (larger) ships entering the Seaway. Experts also question the economic wisdom of locating a terminal so close to the planned new terminal (& other two) already in Brisbane - cruise lines apparently cannibalise competing ports, using proximity & the dummy spit we wont come line to leverage ever lower port fees (at the expense of ratepayers no doubt). ASF CEO Alan Fife has stated this new WB city will accommodate 15,000 people and Tim Poole (spin dr) has said the project will not be competed until 2015 - thats a decade of construction mid Broadwater. He also says the Seaway may be dredged to 12 metres to accommodate ships as large as the Queen Mary 2 & there will be one four lane bridge into Labrador to carry traffic... opponents have claimed those apartments etc will be sold in China & the whole development may use (many) foreign workers on 457 visas... which conveniently, has just been made a whole lot easier by the Abbott Govt. So, inflated employment claims are looking very sketchy. Likewise massive economic benefit claims of $14B have never been publicly substantiated by any economic or other analysis. Pics attached are taken at ASFs structured consultation & reveal the extent of development they require to justify cost and yield. Other is GCB photo of the project footprint as detailed on ASF Info centre wall in Broadwater Parklands.
