SUNDAY REFLECTION: Well my Birthday came and went along with Thanksgiving. It became a weeklong celebration starting last Monday and ending Friday. I want to thank my Facebook family, my family, my friends and all those who treated this old guy who, still thinks like a teenager, to a drink, meal and even a present or two, to all of you, THANK YOU. I want to thank all of you for reading my Thanksgiving Story. I proudly support all our men and women in uniform but we often forget that the men and women in brown, blue, black, green and camo, who patrol our streets, are not given their proper due. Marcia Kratky Nacinovich brought it up as a comment on my story. Each day that one of our brothers and sisters in arms, straps on a sam brown and enters a patrol car, they are risking their lives for us. Normally in a combat zone you are pretty sure who the enemy is (with the exception of Viet Nam and possibly Afghanistan), but on our City streets our police, sheriffs and even fire personnel, are never sure who is on their side and who is ready to make them a victim. Even with all the high tech toys at the disposal of our Law Enforcement, it still comes down to face to face interaction with our citizens, which can prove deadly. It doesn’t matter if you patrol the streets of Palm Springs, like I did or New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or Riverside County. The dynamic is the same. My friends Gary Jeandron, Sheriff Stan Sniff and John J. Benoit know exactly what I mean and I am glad that they are still involved in policing our communities, whether with a gun or with representation. There is no expiration date on the oath that I took and that they took. It’s heady stuff when you are just a kid and you are asked to enforce and defend the law and the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic. The experience changed me and I know that anyone involved is also changed forever. Have a peaceful week, don’t forget about the La Quinta Chamber of Commerces Toys for Tots event at the La Quinta Country Club tomorrow at 5:30pm. Bring an unwrapped toy for our guests the United States Marine Corp. who in turn get those toys to needy families both civilian and military. My mother used to say, everyone is important but she said, it’s not enough to be important, you must do something important to earn your humanity. Bring a toy, get involved, do something important!
