SUNDAYs Sermon: 6th July 2014 HAVE YOU BEEN DRINKING LATELY? John 4:7-13(NIV) When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” I11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” REFLECTION: We well know that Jews and Samaritans didnt fellowship together. In those times, the Jews regard themselves as superior. So why did Jesus being a Jew intentionally went to meet this woman at the well? The well was the meeting place of the women in those times. And a man intentionally meeting a woman at this place for women connotes his interest in her. Jesus was interested in this woman snd not just a particular woman but a woman who is not a Jew. And the woman Jesus waited for at the well had 5 husbands and is living with 6th man who was not her husband. Consider Jesus as the 7th man to get interested in her but on the highest spiritual level and that the number 7 biblically, means perfection, complete wholeness. And He asked her for water. Remember, God spoke and the universe was created. He need nothing from anyone. But Jesus asked this woman (and a Samaritan woman mind you, and a renown sinner as well)water as she fetched from the well. What was Jesus motive in this meeting? You see, God did not come for the holy but for the sinners. God did not come for the healthy but for the sick. Gods heart longs not for sinners to perish. We sinners are close to Gods heart. He knows that His enemy Satan had deceived us and God in Christ Jesus wants to free us from the enemys deception, from the enemys oppression and by the Blood of Jesus, SET US FREE! God is about blessings, freedom, anointing, LIFE! In this story, Jesus is the womans wholeness, salvation and using natural things like the water in the well He was saying to the Samaritan woman that unlike this water from the well, the Living Water(this is the Holy Spirit) that Jesus gives can quench the thirst for life, for joy, for anything one desires. In Jesus, one can find REST from labour in finding what can satisfy. John 7:37-38(NIV) On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” In closing, if were honest to ourselves, isnt it true that our sinful past delude us of the perspective of our future in Christ? When we keep allowing our sinful past to steal our perception of the reality of Gods love for us in Jesus, we would become so skeptical and not allow Gods love to draw us near to Him. And this is what happened to the people where Jesus grew up as a child. Dont let our sinful past hold back what miracles God can do in our life for a life of hope and a future! Have a read on this: Mark 6:4-6(NIV) Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their LACK OF FAITH. May God be glorified today and forever! God bless us all. ;)
