SUNNYLAND SLIMS BIRTHDAY IS TODAY. He was born Albert Luandrew in Vance, Mississippi, in 1906 and lived one year for every key on the pianos he played into history. Slim sharpened his skills playing the levee camps of the Delta before moving to Chicago and becoming part of the blues firmament along with Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and other better-known artists. Although Sunnyland never becomes a major star in his own right, he was an MVP sideman and an essential glue in the cracks of the scene, playing a role of friend, mentor, inspiration and dependable utility man that carried him into the hearts of many.
