SURAT: Low lying areas of Surat are will be flooded by Monday morning as Ukai dam authorities started discharge of 4.25 lakh cusecs of water from 1.00am. The inflow in reservoir was recorded at 7.25 lakh cusecs of water which led to swelling of water levels to 342.50 feet in the dam. Following heavy rain in upper catchment areas of Tapi river basin, more than 1100 MCM of water is expected to flow in Ukai dam in coming 24 hours. Anticipating huge quantity of water, Surat Municipal Authorities has closed all the 30 flood gates and employed staff with de watering pumps at different places in the city. Jatin Shah, city engineer of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) said, "Low lying areas like Kadarsha ni Naal, Swaminarayan Temple and Gujarat Gas circle in Adajan, Bahrimata, Ved road, Umra Circle, Rander Mora BHagal are likely get flooded." More than 3 lakh cusecs of water release leads to flooding in Surat city in some areas and this time too at the fag end of the monsoon, it is likely that city will wake up to reality of floods staring at their face. 345 feet is the full reservoir level in Ukai and with levels recording 342.5 feet on Monday, authorities are left with no other option but to release any additional water coming in the dam. PS Dave engineer on duty at Ukai dam said, "We are waiting for inflow of water to reduce. UNless that happens we cant reduce the discharge quantity."
