SURPRISING NEWS ABOUT OUR SCHOOL CAFETERIAS It may surprise you to know that the Kaufman ISD does not pay for student breakfast or lunches! KISD contracts with a company named Chartwells to provide meals for students. Chartwells receives its funding through meal reimbursements from the National School Breakfast and Lunch program. Although Chartwell staff work in our cafeterias, they are not employees of the district. It may also surprise you to know that school menus and snacks in schools are governed by the federal Department of Agriculture. This department recently issued new “Smart Snacks in School” standards which took effect in July. Under these standards most foods sold in schools will have limited fat, calories, sugar, and sodium and must have less than 200 calories. Most students feel that these regulations are too restrictive but nationwide, many parents feel that they are not restrictive enough! Finally, you will really be surprised to learn that all KISD students in grades PK-6 will be provided FREE breakfasts and FREE lunches for the next school year! Again, no local tax dollars will be used to fund this program. These free meals are being provided by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, through the U.S. Department of Education’s Community Eligibility Provision. Students from low-income homes and students from wealthy homes will both be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free without filing income statements to qualify. Since this is the first year that school districts in Texas are eligible to apply, Kaufman ISD will be among the first districts in the state to take advantage of this program. Less paperwork and more meals for free? Now THAT’s a surprise!!
