SURRY COUNTY SCHOOLS NEWS RELEASE Sonia Dickerson, Director of Communications P.O. Box 364 Dobson, North Carolina 27017 336/386-8211 Fax: 336/386-4756 E-Mail: [email protected] For Immediate Release DOBSON, NC – June 4, 2014 The Surry County Board of Education is proud to announce Mrs. Lorrie Sawyers, as the new principal of East Surry High School effective July 1, 2014. Mrs. Sawyers will replace Mrs. Diane Beane, who will retire effective June 30, 2014. Most recently, Sawyers served for the past two years as principal of Pilot Mountain Middle School. Sawyers received her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and her master’s in educational administration from High Point University. She is also a 1985 graduate of East Surry High School and looks forward to coming back to lead her alma mater. She began her career with Surry County Schools in 1989 working her first two years as an exceptional children’s teacher at Dobson Elementary and Central Middle School. She then spent the next 19 years as a history/social studies teacher at East Surry, where she served as a department chair and chair of the school improvement team. Prior to serving as principal of Pilot Middle, she served two years as assistant principal at Pilot Middle. Sawyer’s was selected after an extensive interview process from a large pool of highly qualified applicants. Dr. Travis Reeves, Superintendent of the Surry County Schools gathered input from both the faculty of East Surry and the Board of Education related to the characteristics they would want in the next principal of East Surry. Both groups were quick to praise the job that Mrs. Beane had done as principal and cited many of her attributes as key for the next principal. Fairness, invested in the school, leadership, compassion were just a few of the attributes noted of Beane that the next principal should possess. The selection committee and board believe that Sawyers possesses those attributes and will continue to lead East Surry, as one of the top performing high schools in the county, region and state. Lorrie Sawyers commented, “I will give East Surry High School 110%. I care deeply about the school and vow to listen, be fair and work with the staff to continue the tradition of excellence at East Surry.” In other personnel matters, the Surry County Board of Education announced the following administrative assignments beginning July 1, 2014. Dr. Jill Reinhardt and Dr. Jeff Tunstall will begin serving the district as assistant superintendents in July. Reinhardt will become assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and career and technical education. Tunstall will become assistant superintendent for student accountability and student services. The promotion of Reinhardt and Tunstall was a result of the June 30, 2014 retirement of Dr. Terri Mosley, assistant superintendent for instructional services and the consolidation of other central office positions. Mosley was recently elected to the Surry County Board of Education and will begin serving in that capacity in July 2014. Dr. Travis L. Reeves commented, “We will miss Dr. Mosley’s leadership and dedication to Surry County Schools. We are fortunate that we have extremely qualified individuals to step in as Mosley begins her new role serving the district as a member of the Board of Education.” In additional board action, the Board also promoted current assistant superintendent for human resources, Mr. Chuck Graham to serve as associate superintendent for human resources and operations. Mrs. Jennifer Scott will serve the district as executive director of elementary education and academically gifted students. Mr. David Brown was named chief technology officer. “The central office reorganization will allow Surry County Schools to operate efficiently and effectively as we work to educate the whole child for global success,” Dr. Travis L. Reeves noted.
