SWANS V ROCKHAMPTON PANTHERS AFL Yeppoon Swans finished the home and away season in second position with a comfortable win over Rockhampton Panthers in difficult conditions. Resting some key personal, the Swans started slow but took control by halftime, at times the Swans over possessed the footy and this resulted in skill errors which the Panthers capitalized on to keep them in the game. Roughy excelled in the wet conditions early and the Cossens Boys and Nichols were outstanding in the packs around the ground. Robertson had a strong game in defense, Wallin and Roberts were also effective. Up forward Emmsy was lively kicking 4 goals in a match suited for small forwards. Reserve grade celebrated the end of their season with a great win as they just fell short of qualifying for finals. With an injection of youth from the resting under 17 squad the Ressies started well and never looked back. Up forward young gun Stevens was dangerous and Humphries was dominating with high quality delivery to attacking zones. Miles, McKenzie and Elliott capped off strong season performances and the Iceman Durbridge was again a winner around the ground. Livewire Newman was awarded the mug, and his improving form has been a highlight this season. The Swanettes tasted defeat but their season remains alive as they have qualified for the first round of finals next week. McDonald was best on ground as she mopped up across halfback, and her second efforts in the contest were awesome. Grundon battled hard in difficult conditions as did work horse Manion. Houlden and Ryan were effective in tagging roles against their opponents to the point they had to leave the ground to break the pressure. The squad battled hard throughout the contest and will regroup in a do or die attempt at finals glory next week. The Swans junior ranks have had a stellar season with all teams finishing on top of the ladder to win minor premierships. The undefeated under 17’s had no match due to a forfeit of their opposition. Under 15’s are in impressive form as they blew the Rocky side away. Roudy was outstanding , and his run and carry game gives the side great drive. Boyd was like a General across halfback and repelled many attacks, and Miles was presenting well up forward. Noah put on a great display of roving in slippery conditions. The whole team excelled in a dominant performance and are poised for an assault on the finals. Under 13’s can’t wait for finals, so an avalanche of 8 goals in the first half put the opposition to bed early in their contest .Coach Bird had enough confidence in the flexibility of his squad to swap defensive lines with forward lines and gave his full complement of players a solid run before the run home. Tommy kicked 4 goals in the first half and is finding good form. Blake was best on ground and was a ball magnet around the ground and was well supported by Logan, Tommy, Joe P and Will. Next week the Swanettes travel to Gladstone to play in the first round of finals in a sudden death game, the following week the Seniors, Under 17’s, 15’s and 13’s battle for a place in the Grand Final in Rockhampton.
