SWEET AS HONEY MEAN AS CAT MANURE chapter #5 Back at camp Tall Tail seeks out Tatonka Chip for advice on how to score some wild honey, no pun intended. Without hesitation Tatonka Chip whips out his peace pipe and says; “with this.” “Is that true?” asks Tall Tail “Honest Injun” says Tatonka Chip “How would one go about getting wild honey, with that?” “You make peace with the bees” says Tatonka Chip. That makes sense thought Tall tail. But how does one locate the bee’s hive with the honey? Glad you asked says Tatonka Chip, you get some honey and some thread, dip the thread in the honey and leave it on a stump and watch. When the bees come to get the honey, the thread will stick to them and you can spot them easier, and follow them back to their hive. Tall Tail’s neck swelled all up and it was on now, and there would be no stopping it. Tall Tail asks his Aunt Water Lilly is she had some honey and a few piece of thread he could have? She said she had just a smidgen left in the honey bucket, no pun intended, you are welcome to it, and here is some thread. As Tall Tail walked through camp he runs into Coyote. What do ya got in the bucket Tall Tail? “Honey” was his response. Likes me some honey says Coyote. How about you stop Bogarting that and give me some? I would Coyote, but I only got a smidgen, enough to coat this here thread. Why do you want to coat that there thread with honey, are you crazy? No, sly as a fox says Tall Tail, let me lay the skinny on ya. This here honey and thread is gonna get me more honey than I would know what to do with. Coyote is musing in his mind thinking to himself, he would know what to do with it, so he says; “I could help ya with getting that there honey and the part you don’t know what to do with, you could give to me.” Yes I would Coyote, Coyote’s eyes glassed over and he started salivating profusely, in was on now and there would be not stopping it, because Coyote liked him some honey, no pun intended. How do we go about getting this here honey Coyote asks Tall Tail? We coat the thread with this here honey and put it on a stump and watch for bees to come. When they come to feed on the honey the thread will stick to them and make it easier for us follow them as they head back to their hive. Then Tall Tail pulls out Tatonka Chip’s peace pipe and shows it to Coyote. “What are you going to do with that?” asks Coyote. “Make peace with the bees” says Tall Tail. “Yes you are” says Coyote and I’ll do it with you. Tall Tail tells Coyote that they might need one more person seeing as to how climbing might be involved and both their butts were built kind of close to the ground. “How about my cousin Bob Cat?” says Coyote; “he’s tall” Now Bob Cat was taller than Tall Tail or Coyote but not too smart. Tall Tail realized they did not need brains, just another rung on their latter to success and Bob Cat could fill that bill. It did not take long for the bees to locate the honey and thread. They had agreed each one would follow a thread upping their chances of finding the hive. They all ended up in almost the same spot, they knew the hive was near by. Looking around Tall Tail notices a hole in a tree about eight feet off the ground and figures that’s it. He tells to Bob Cat; “jump up on that stump next to the tree and hoist Coyote up on your shoulders so he can make peace with them bees. Up goes Bob Cat on the stump, Coyote climbs up on Bob Cats shoulders lights the peace pipe and begins blowing smoke into the hole. “I can here buzzing,” says Bob Cat, “so can I” says Coyote as he blows smoke in the hole. “Are you making peace with them bees? Tall Tail asks Coyote.” Coyote stated to say something just as the stump caves in under both Bob Cat and Coyote, whoosh down they go. They had found the hive; it was in the stump, not the tree. And that stump exploded, bees everywhere. They were both running place for a bit there, Bob Cat inside the stump and Coyote on Bob Cats shoulders. One would have thought just getting stung was bad enough, but these war hoops had to start slapping themselves and running through the sticker bushes. Bob Cat squealing like a stuck pig and Coyote with the peace pipe still in his mouth a sparking and smoking like a locomotive. The whole hive apparently took off after them, so Tall Tail moseys on over to the stump and fills the two buckets he had brought along with honey and heads back to camp. On the way he meets Coyote and Bob Cat all scratched and stung up. Entering the camp they meet Tatonka Chip, he asks, “where have you been?” noticing that Coyote and Bob Cat is all scratched and stung up. We located the bee hive and tried to make peace with the bees like you said. Here is you peace pipe back, it didn’t work, them bees was mean as cat manure. Tatonka Chip turned a little ashen and had to sit down on a log. “Is that true Tall Tail?” asks Tatonka Chip? Honest Injun say Tall Tail, got the honey right here to prove it. Tatonka Chip fell backwards off the log and passed clean out. And that’s all we got to say about that.
