SWIFT ACTIONS BY BANGLADESH ON SUNDARBANS OIL SPILL An oil-tanker sank in the Shela River route in the Sundarbans spilling 350,000 litres of furnace oil. This will cause serious environmental problems over a 50 km area of the world’s largest mangrove forests which serve as habitat of wildlife icons like the Bengal Tiger. The Ministry of Environment and Forests of Bangladesh immediately closed the route temporarily and started oil spill clearing. The agency is also recommending permanent closure in the future.
