Shields I am fine with, if his asking price is reasonable for baseball values of reasonable, but no more ridiculous long-term contracts for starting pitchers. Grant Brisbee says that pitching talent is the Dad went out for a pack of smokes of baseball talent, and I agree: talent packs up and vanishes apropos of nothing in that position. Its just too risky in the long run. You could argue that Zito albatross of a contract made the team rely more on young, homegrown talent that has ended up elevating the team, and I would agree with that premise. Still. Big pitching contracts make me do the Matt Cain I just gave up a tater face.
