Sabrina sums it up to a tee. This is why my horses will not go to a dealer or auction, this is why I place with a contract of no resell. Even if they come back and I cannot afford to feed them, I will euthanize them. All of our horses have issues of some kind or another and as Sabrina says there are thousands of kid safe horses that go to slaughter every week. Beautiful, well trained, kid safe horses. Euthanizing a healthy horse is tragic. Sending a horse with issues to auction or dealer or even to a private home without a contract is a sure death sentence in a horribly cruel slaughterhouse. I have learned so much in the past few years about how quickly people might have to resell or simply not want to put time into a lame, un-rideable, old or difficult horse. I have learned not to trust that a forever home is that. Even I cannot provide them a forever home now but I can provide a gentle way to die and not a terrifying one.
