Sacrificing our own liberty and privacy in the name of fighting - TopicsExpress

Sacrificing our own liberty and privacy in the name of fighting terrorism is not worth it. Innocent Americans who are not suspected of any crime should not live in fear of being spied on by their government. Furthermore, the current unconstitutional surveillance programs amount to a precursor to death squads like those the CIA helped train in Central and South America. Every time I contribute to a progressive cause (any group could be labeled "terrorist"), I worry that someday I will be taken away in the middle of the night and detained indefinitely without trial, perhaps tortured or killed. Because of the Patriot Act and related legislation, the election of a president with the mindset of a Dick Cheney is all it will take to turn the US into a totalitarian police state.
