Sadly, we have last another former Pensacola High Tiger. Dr. Reed Bell passed away this past Sunday. We was a great football and basketball player at PHS. He attended U of F on a football scholarship, but left to join the military during WWII. Following his discharge he attended Sewanee- the University of the South where he was a legend. The Sewanee Athletic Hall of Fame web site provides the following: Reed Bell -- "Running Back/Linebacker… two-time All-American, 1947-48 … captain in football and basketball …His football jersey, #18, is retired …Started for the U. of Florida in 1944 (football) as a freshman … In the navy for 20 months … enrolled at Sewanee in fall 1946 … High School: Pensacola HS …… All-State in football and All-City in football and basketball at Pensacola HS … salutatorian and senior class president …Lives in Pensacola, Fla." Reed Bell was the first player honored by the retirement of his jersey at Sewanee. His football jersey (No. 49) was retired by PHS in 2011.
