Safe and Sound Percy knelt next to Annabeth, trying to blink - TopicsExpress

Safe and Sound Percy knelt next to Annabeth, trying to blink back tears. His stomach twisted in knots, and he had to consciously remind himself to breathe. His vision was clouded, which seemed almost like a sick blessing. It distracted him from the sight before him, but the reason for his tears made him regret thinking of it as well. Annabeth coughed up blood. Her fingers grasped weakly for Percy’s and she glanced up at him with dull, yearning eyes. The end of a javelin protruded from her chest, and the blood turned her Camp Half-Blood shirt scarlet. P-Percy… Annabeth coughed, trying her hardest to squeeze his hand. Her head lulled, and her eyelids fluttered sporadically. No…. Percy said, shaking his head quietly. He didn’t want ×Annabeth to strain herself anymore than necessary. After all, it was his fault she was dying. If he hadn’t been so careless, if it hadn’t let his guard down for just one second, ×Annabeth wouldn’t have had to take that spear for him. Percy brought Annabeth’s cold fingers to his lips. They were covered in blood. He tried to avoid looking at the area in her stomach that was the cause of her pain. There was no use giving her any medical attention. Many of her major organs had been hit, and ×Percy decided he’d rather spend his last moments alone with her rather than having everyone fuss over her to no avail. His tears dropped on Annabeth’s cheeks. She rolled her eyes up to meet Percy’s parting her lips slightly, trying to get words out. Percy leaned down so that his ear was just above her lips. K-kids… she muttered quietly with a pained smile. Tell… m-me… Percy didn’t mean to, but he let out a small laugh. For the past couple weeks, after they’d escaped ×Tartarus, the two of them had given serious thought to starting a family one day, and what their children would be like. Percy pursed his lips. He needed to appease ×Annabeth one last time. “We’ll have two kids,” he began, trying to keep his voice even. Annabeth blinked slowly, urging him to go on. She ran her thumb slowly over the back of his hand. “A boy and a girl.” Annabeth smiled weakly, then coughed. Her face was ghostly pale. And they’ll both have dark hair, but your eyes, since your eyes are so beautiful, Percy continued. He felt his face go red. Even in his death, ×Annabeth still had the ability to make him feel shy when he complimented her. Th-thanks… Annabeth muttered. She closed her eyes, but raised her eyebrows to signal she was still listening. Percy’s voice caught in his throat. He knew ×Annabeth didn’t have much time left. And they’ll be so smart, both of them, he added. Because they take after you and not me, which his pretty lucky. And you and I will teach them how to be good people and help others, so nothing you and I ever did goes to waste. And we could… Percy’s voice trailed off as ×Annabeth took a sharp intake of breath. She exhaled deeply. Percy waited for another cough, or for ×Annabeth to squeeze his hand again. There was nothing in return. He couldn’t remember for how long he sat in front of Annabeth’s lifeless body, staring in disbelief. He didn’t cry as much as he thought he would, choosing instead to keep himself occupied with the fact that Annabeth was in Elysium, and she was happy. She was safe, and the war was over for her. But for Percy, it had just begun. Connorᴬᴰᴹᴵᴺ
