Safety is always a top concern of the Surry County Schools Board - TopicsExpress

Safety is always a top concern of the Surry County Schools Board of Education. They continuously seek opportunities and funding sources to ensure schools have the most efficient safety measures available. During the 2013-2014 school year, the Board selected White Plains Elementary School to pilot the Aiphone Access Control System, an electronic entry door security system. The pilot proved to be successful. Both parents and staff were supportive of the Board’s forward thinking. The Board of Education is excited that this new option is available and the security this new system will give schools. It is the cooperation between the Surry County Schools Board of Education and the Surry County Commissioners that provided funding for this project for the elementary and middle schools. The Surry County School System is currently in the process of installing Access Control Systems in all other elementary schools and the four middle schools. The Aiphone Access Control System is an electronic entry door security system on the front door, which consists of a buzz-in intercom to the front office. This system will require the front office staff to unlock the door before visitors may enter. The Aiphone System will work in conjunction with the existing surveillance camera systems already in place at the schools. In addition, there will also be Alarm Lock keyless entries on all other outside doors at the elementary and middle schools that have multiple buildings, therefore having the entire campus secure with all doors locked during the school day. Surry County Schools appreciates the cooperation of the Surry County Sheriff’s Department and local law enforcement officials for their assistance in making schools safe for all students and staff. Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson praised the Surry County Schools Board of Education and the Surry County Board of Commissioners for their efforts to make safety top priority. “This is an example of cooperation between Surry County Schools Board of Education and the Surry County Board of Commissioners. It is also an example of forward thinking, being proactive in preventing things happening rather than reacting when something occurs. It is an absolute pleasure, as Sheriff, to have a working relationship with both Boards that allows us to collaborate on projects that are good for kids. It provides security for students and a peace of mind for parents,” he said. Dr. Travis L. Reeves commented, “We are fortunate to have great schools and a supportive community. This increased security measure helps to ensure that schools are a safe place where learning is the primary focus.”
