Sakur Tan leads; youth leaders make it to Top Ten Ask someone what comes to his/her mind when one hears Jolo, Sulu. The things that come to peoples minds reflect how much change is needed in the said province. But with this, let me introduce you to the Most Powerful and Respected Leaders of Jolo, Sulu as of the writing of this entry. Insider Jolo (Sulu) or IJS has conducted focus group discussions among key groups across Jolo- bread winners, women, youth, and even ordinary citizens. The survey included 60 names and yielded to the following results: Rank 1 Sakur Tan (38.9%) (Present: Vice Governor, Former Governor, Former Councilor, Businessman) He has been a three-termer governor of Sulu thats why its no longer a surprised that 2/5 of those who were surveyed answered him as the most powerful leader of Jolo today. Rank 2 Butch Izquierdo (17.4%) (Present: Board Member of Sulus 1st Dist., Former Vice Mayor and Councilor of Jolo) For most Joloanos, its still clear to them that Butch was their elected mayor when the deceased Soud Tan left the towns top post. Known for his humility and ability to relate with the ordinary Tausugs, he has captured the so-called trust and confidence of the Tausug people. Rank 3 Edsir Tan II (12.2%) (Present: Vice Mayor of Jolo, Councilor) An undefeated Jolo Councilor and Vice Mayor, Edsir is expected to be the next town mayor. Though criticized for being silent on major issues in Jolo, his kindness and pure heart has resonated across Jolo making him one of the most beloved Tans in the urban town. Rank 4 Kerkhar Tan (7.9%) (Present: Councilor of Jolo, Former Barangay Captain of Jolo) Many were still surprised when Kerkhar topped the Council race in his second bid for the said position. Speculations were loud that the Tan Camp was almost divided with one faction led by those who supported Kerkhars candidacy. Reports and early hearsays also suggest a possible Edsir-Kerkhar match for mayorship but knowing Tan politics, they do not want to be divided in elections. Rank 5 Nurjam Alfad (5.8%) (Present: Councilor, Famous Athlete) Popular among women and young voters, Nurjam makes it to the top 5 as one of the most influential leaders in urban Jolo. He has been noted for being close and relatable to the Tausugs. Rank 6 Mudir Estrella (4.4%) (Present: Vice President, Ateneo Law, UP Professor, Former Chairperson, UP Manila) The most surprising entry is the grandson of undefeated Councilor Hji. Muktadir Ahmad who has been hugely popular among the college students we surveyed. According to them, Mudir has been their idol making waves in Manila for his brilliance in his academics, leadership, and volunteer work. Rank 7 Khumz Tan (2.9%) (Former SK President) Jolo politics is almost the same with national politics with Khumz, together with his father Kerkhar, making it to the Top Ten of most powerful leaders in Jolo. He was hugely popular during his stint as the SK President. Reports suggest that he is set to succeed his father and continue the Tan legacy in Jolo. Rank 8 (Former Vice Governor of Sulu, Former 2nd Dist. Representative, Former Mayor of Tongkil) Lady Ann Sahidulla (1.6%) The lone female leader who made it to this surveys top ten is no other than the undefeated Vice Governor of Sulu-- Lady Ann. Famous for being a singer, she is also famous for her generosity and kindness to her supporters. Rank 9 Tuan Pat Radjaie (1.1%) (Present: Councilor, Imam) The combination of politics and religion is painted all over Tuan Pat who manages to win the hearts of the Joloanos both when he speaks as a leader and even as an Imam. Known for insightful speeches and lessons, Tuan Pat has been one of the most influential leaders in Jolo. Rank 10 Zed Tan (0.7%) (Present: Councilor) THe 5th Tan in the top ten list, Zed is seen as one of the sincerest leaders Jolo has. He has made friends and connections even with the poor Joloanos. Others combined: 7.1% Jolo: A Tan Country It is noteworthy that the Tans have dominated the survey being popular across all sectors with Sakur topping all sectors except for college students where Mudir placed first. This is both healthy and unhealthy for the clan because reports suggest that since they clearly dominate Jolo, chances are, they will be going up against each other. Read the possible Edisr-Kerkhar showdown. Youth leaders made it to the Top Ten Although sources tell us that both Mudir and Khumz are in the Tan Camp, it is inspiring that youth leaders have also managed to bag places in the top ten with the two bringing new perspectives in Jolos politics.
