Salem police looking for counterfeiter December 12, 2014 By MARY ANN GREIER , Salem News SALEM - Area store clerks are being asked to keep a close eye on the cash theyre receiving from customers due to the discovery of counterfeit bills the last couple of weeks. Most of the bills were getting are twenties, tens and fives, Salem Police Det. Dave Talbert said. He said the likely reason behind the smaller bills being used is that clerks are less attentive to smaller bills than larger bills. Circle K on East State Street reported Thursday morning that the store had received a counterfeit $20 bill. Someone purchased $5 worth of gas and paid with a $20 bill and police want to talk with that person who was shown on video surveillance footage. He was described as a male in his early 20s. Genes Drive Thru on East State Street reported receiving two counterfeit ten-dollar bills earlier this week and Great Clips, also on East State Street, reported receiving a counterfeit five-dollar bill. There have been other instances with other businesses, with Talbert saying its been going on for about two weeks now. A month ago, he said there was a lot of counterfeit bills being found in the southern end of Columbiana County. He said people should be looking at the texture and weight of the paper, noting that a counterfeit bill is usually lighter and softer, less crisp. He also suggested looking out for someone who buys a small item with a larger bill. With the technology available now, people can scan money into their computer and try to print their own, which is obviously illegal. Counterfeiters will wash the bills several times or bleach them to make them look like theyve been in circulation for awhile. He said there are several methods to manufacture counterfeit bills and somebody out there is making a lot of them. Talbert said the message he wants to get out is for people to be vigilant. Check out the money and if theres a suspicion a bill is counterfeit, call police or turn it over to a bank. Anyone with information about the counterfeit bills or the identity of the person of interest should call the Salem Police Department at 330-337-7811. [email protected]
