Saludos. As news of the devastation to Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos and la Paz comes in we have to consider ourselves lucky here on the East Cape. There is still a lot of clean up to be done in the way of downed trees, broken limbs and in places downed power poles. The dirt streets in both Buena Vista and Los Barriles suffered a great deal of erosion. But unlike other areas that took a a direct hit, the homes and hotels came through remarkably well. Getting here remains a major obstacle. The bridge at Mira Flores washed out, essentially closing the road up from the south. The road north to la Paz was still closed as of yesterday afternoon. While the hotels are operational, the air port in San Jose remains closed except for the evacuation flights being conducted by the Mexican Military transporting non residents from the Cabo/San Jose to other international airports in Mexico where folks can get connecting flights to the US and Canada. We have been hearing lots of rumors as to when the airport will resume normal operations. Alaskan Airlines is scheduled to fly in by the weekend to evacuate folks stranded in the Cabo area. US Air has notified some of its passengers, who were scheduled to come in this week, that they would not resume normal operations till the 14th of October. So there is our dilemma, we can service our clients locally, but there is no way to get here for a while. Our guide service and the hotels will survive, but for the local hotel workers, Captains and service workers this will be a major economic hit. Our hearts go out to all our friends in La Ribera, los Barriles and Buena Vista. As we hear of needs for the community I will post that here on our facebook site.
