Sam Harris on the difference between Muhammad and Jesus: Muhammad was not a hippie who got crucified. (About 45 min into the conversation) Its amazing how someone who claims to value precision and fairness in discourse will make the most ridiculous statements imaginable, by allusion -- and get away with it. No student of Christianity: liberal, conservative, fundamentalist; with any knowledge of the evidence about Jesus; believes the word hippie comes close to describing him accurately. The most credeble scholars, from a purely secular, scientific perspective, would say he was quite the opposite. The Romans most likely crucified him because he proved himself to be an enemy of the state. But it suits Harriss agenda, in this instance, to take the popular reading of the gospels literally on the personality and words of Jesus. This is not an isolated gaffe. This is how Harris works when anyone tries to hold his feet to the fire on his selective criticim of Muslims over other religious dogmatists. I am also disappointed that Uygur didnt call him on it. They both are perfectly willing to take the Sermon on the Mount literally (in the sense that Jesus actually delivered that sermon) -- Harris for obvious reasons -- Uygur perhaps because he is exhausted by Harriss nitpicking and wants to get on with the discussion.
