Sam McKamey has been through obstacles that would overcome most of us. Born prematurely because of an accident caused by a drunk driver, he faces the daily challenges of cerebral palsy and moving around primarily by wheelchair. Yet possibly his greatest trial ever has been the loss of his big brother. hero and best friend, Will, only a few weeks ago (#LiveLikeWill). Despite all of this, his joyous spirit and tremendous faith never waiver. A few highlights of our chapel service are paraphrased below: Question: Sam, if you could speak with the person that caused the accident that resulted in you being born prematurely, what would you say? Sam: I would say that I wouldnt want to change anything because of the people that I have met and the opportunities that I have had through this. I wouldnt ask for it to be any different. Question: Sam, your mom tells me that you had a dream recently. Can you tell us about that? Sam: I was in heaven and I saw Will and he had a crown on, because you know in heaven we will receive rewards that we will want to leave at the feet of Jesus. Will asked me to race and I did because I didnt need this wheelchair anymore. For just a moment I had a new body, like the one I will have! Question: At one time, you thought that you might want to work in a bookstore. What are your plans after school at this point? Sam: I plan to go to UT and then to become a Young Life leader! Question: Students, do you think Sam will make a great youth leader someday? Tremendous applause. Not. A. Dry. Eye. Quote by student, Daylan Coffey: That was intense! I havent cried in three years, but I did today! Quote by principal, Amanda Lane: There are people who can go on and on and you wonder what in the world they are talking about. But Sam came and in a few sentences was able to say it all. Our students needed to hear that. They needed to hear from Sam. Sam received two standing ovations. A large group of students encircled him to pray for him, and to have him pray for them. Then endless groups of students surrounded him, wanting their picture made with such an inspiration. Thank you, Sam McKamey. Not only do we want to live like Will.....we want to live like Sam.
