Sam update.....Sam had a sleep study done a month ago. It revealed what we already knew...severe sleep apnea. Since he has already had his tonsils and adenoids out and he will not wear a C-pap, we werent given any options other than do nothing or a tracheostomy. Sams kyphosis, small airway and short neck all contribute to the problem. Because sleep apnea can have a long term affect on his heart, we saw a cardiologist today to get a baseline evaluation of his heart function. The doctor said Sams heart is perfectly normal. It sure is good to hear the words Sam and normal in the same sentence! We have decided to reduce Sams caloric intake to help him lose weight. We hope that will help reduce his apnea enough that his heart function wont be compromised and there will be no need for any surgical intervention. So far he is doing well on his diet. I think we are going to get him a fit bit charge HR to track how many calories he is actually burning during the day so we can adjust his intake if necessary. It will also monitor his heart rate and the amount of sleep he is getting. We put one on him for a couple of days and he surprised us by keeping it on! Never a dull moment with this boy. Its a new adventure all the time!
