San Diego Democratic consultant Chris Crotty sees no political downside to labor’s reticence. “It serves no purpose for them to call for him to resign,” he said. “Anyone who understands what’s going on realizes that the only avenue for the mayor to be removed at this point is a recall.” And the chances of a recall succeeding are slim to none in Crotty’s view. Assuming the effort collects the required 101,597 signatures in 39 days with a 30-day extension of that deadline if needed, Crotty said Filner will move to thwart it. “The first thing that will happen is he will file a lawsuit challenging the city’s ordinance as unconstitutional, and that would hold a recall in abeyance,” Crotty said.
