San Diego POA makes urgent appeal From Cynthia Brown: Brian Marvel asked me to send this message out to all the police unions on the PubSecAlliance list. Please do whatever you can to help them. Everyone in law enforcement has a big stake in defeating this guy for Congress. Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated. American Police Beat is making a $500 contribution. The San Diego POA has set up a Federal PAC to raise money for this campaign and all expenditures will be publicly disclosed in accordance with FEC guidelines. Here is the link that answers any questions you may have on federal PAC’s: fec.gov/ans/answers_pac.shtml. Here is Brians message: With 435 seats in Congress, it might be difficult to see how one race can have a big impact. Here in San Diego, one of the country’s most contested congressional races features Carl DeMaio, the unsuccessful candidate for Mayor who is best known for wanting to gut pensions, eliminate promises on retiree health care and place all public employees in 401ks. He has no intention of making current systems sustainable; complete elimination is his goal. Not even the benefits of police officers are able to escape his sights – in fact, he voted against survivor benefits for families of officers who die in the line of duty. Now that he’s running for Congress, he poses a national threat to all public employees – including the military. On the campaign trail, he’s been touting how his anti-pension ballot measure – passed as Proposition B here in San Diego – is something other cities should implement. We have little doubt that, should he prevail in this election, his first act of business on Day 1 will be to begin whittling away at pension benefits for public employees on a national level. As I write this article, DeMaio tweeted, “Looking forward to introducing my Pension Reform bill in Congress and a statewide initiative in CA in 2016.” That’s what’s at stake if Carl gets elected. He’s in a very competitive district – one of the most competitive in the country. That means any bit of support can potentially help his opponent, Rep. Scott Peters, defeat Carl. As I wrote last month we were exploring the idea of creating a federal Political Action Committee. That day has come; we have established one dedicated to this effort – and we’re looking to build national support. We not only want to defeat Carl, but send a message to all future candidates that we’re capable of unifying behind a shared cause. This is the name of our federal PAC: Citizens and Public Safety Proponents for Truth PAC (FEC ID# C00567487). All the money raised will be used to reach out to voters via TV ads and direct mail to send a clear and concise message that Carl is wrong for American and public safety. Send your check or credit card information to: Citizens and Public Safety Proponents for Truth. Send to Nancy Haley, Scott & Cronin 330 Encinitas Blvd. Suite 301 Encinitis, CA 92024 Thank you for your support. Only together can we defeat Carl DeMaio. Brian Marvel, President San Diego POA
